Solid wall plastering is one of the oldest internal finishing methods, used for centuries in buildings made from brick, stone or block. Before plasterboard became common, this was the go-to way to create a flat, durable interior surface. Today, it’s still widely used in renovations, restorations, and for robust high-traffic areas.

There are several types of plaster materials suitable for solid masonry walls:

When Not to Use Gypsum Backing Coats
While gypsum-based backing plasters like bonding or hardwall are commonly used, they are not always suitable.
You should avoid using them on solid 9-inch walls in older homes for a few key reasons:
- Gypsum is not moisture-resistant and can absorb damp from solid walls, leading to degradation or mould.
- These walls need breathable materials – gypsum can trap moisture, damaging both the plaster and the wall underneath.
In these cases, sand and cement or lime plaster provide a much more durable and suitable base coat.

1. Prepare and clean masonry surface (removing dust, flaky paint, or residue)
2. Apply bonding agents or scratch coat if needed
3. Layer the appropriate backing plaster (e.g., sand and cement) to correct depth
4. Allow appropriate drying time
5. Finish with a smooth skim coat for decoration
